Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a structured therapeutic approach that helps us face the situations, thoughts, or feelings that bring up fear or anxiety in a safe and supportive way. It involves gradually approaching what feels uncomfortable while resisting the urge to engage in the habits or rituals we might usually use to relieve distress. This process allows the mind and body to learn that anxiety often reduces naturally over time, and that we can tolerate difficult feelings without needing to avoid or neutralise them.

I often make use of ERP when working with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), where unwanted thoughts and repetitive actions can take up significant time and energy. I have also found value in using this approach to support clients experiencing phobias, panic, anxiety, and some forms of post-traumatic stress. ERP can be challenging, so I work to ensure that therapy provides a safe space to engage with this work at a manageable pace.
