Body-Mind Integration

This approach is grounded in the understanding that the mind and body are intrinsically linked, particularly when responding to stress, anxiety, and trauma. It draws on insights from Somatic Experiencing (SE) mindfulness, and neuroscience to help us understand how our nervous system holds and processes our experiences.

Often, emotional distress isn't just in our minds but can be stored as physical tension, restlessness, or chronic activation in the nervous system. This can happen because trauma or prolonged stress can disrupt the body’s natural ability to complete the stress response cycle (fight, flight, or freeze response), leaving us feeling ‘stuck’ in patterns of hyperarousal or numbness.

In my work, I use principles from somatic experiencing, body-mind literature and mindfulness to help support people to notice these bodily sensations. This process involves building a greater sense of body awareness, understanding what these physical feelings might be communicating, as for some reconnecting with our bodies, when it wasn’t always safe to do so can help regulate our nervous systems. Body-Mind Integration can be particularly helpful for those who feel disconnected, or who are experiencing the ongoing effects of trauma.
